How much should you tip movers?

We are all familiar with the customary tipping for services like restaurants, hair salons, and spas. However, for the moving industry, there hasn’t been established a percentage or exact amount. Although moving tends to be a more expensive service, tipping your movers is a great way to show appreciation for their effort. Below, we discuss some things to consider before tipping a mover.

Why should you tip movers?

Like any other service, tipping is a great way to express your gratitude for the job performed. When you decide on hiring a professional moving service, you are entrusting the movers with your personal and valuable items. In return, they will safely move all your belongings to prevent any damages during the process. Moreover, moving is a very physically intense activity that requires a lot of heavy lifting. Although they will gladly provide you with a hassle-free moving experience, tipping will be a great way to show your satisfaction with their performance.

Questions to ask yourself before tipping:

  • Were they friendly and respectful?
  • Were they able to complete the job within the time frame?
  • Were there any damages to the items during the process?

If your answers to the above questions were positive, it’s a good indicator that tipping would be a great idea. Ultimately, we want to reward movers when we are satisfied with their performance.

What is the right tipping amount?

Now that you decided tipping the Mates would be a nice gesture, we have to determine the right amount. Here are some ideas to help you decide:

Residential move: moving an entire apartment, house, or room

Based on the move’s duration, we suggest tipping $20-$25 per mover for shorter ones or $50 per mover for the entire day.

Small Move: Move boxes or a few large items

Based on the number of items and duration, you can do 10%-15% of the total or $20-$25 per mover.

Pick-up and delivery for e-marketplace: Kijiji, Facebook Marketplace, or Consignment store

Based on the number of items and duration, you can do 10%-15% of the total or $20-$25 per mover.

Long-distance moves: Get help moving outside of Montreal.

Based on the duration of the move, you can do $50-$60.

Storage: Move your items to a storage facility or bring them back home

Based on the number of items and duration, you can do 10%-15% of the total or $20-$25 per mover.

Another way to say thank you

Leaving a positive review is always a great way to show your appreciation and satisfaction with their service. In just a few words, you can leave a smile on a face and a memory that will last forever!
